What did Max Headroom do?

I just watched it on "I Love the 80's 3D".

I get that it was a tv show, and tv movie, he was a man whose brain was downloaded into a computer, he's named after the "Maximum Headroom" sign he saw before he died.

But what was the character originally for? I know he hosted a music video program and advertised for Coca Cola and, more recently, UK Channel 4's switch to digital format.

Max Headroom was created as the computer-generated host of a music video show on Britain's Channel 4 in 1985-86.
